The regional police academy is approved by and operated under the authority of the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES). The program content meets and exceeds minimum training requirements as outlined in the MCOLES Basic Training Curriculum and Training Objectives. The Academy runs for 17 weeks/5 days per week/8 hours per day. Instruction includes classroom lecture, hands-on practice, and scenario-based sessions. Cadets will be required to pass written exams with a 2.0 (“C”) or better, demonstrate acceptable performance in critical skills tests including Firearms, Physical Fitness, Defensive Tactics, First Aid and Emergency Vehicle Operations, and meet established attendance requirements. The Academy includes mandatory dress and conduct requirements and is para-military in structure. Cadets will take the MCOLES Licensing Exam during the final week of the Academy.
Additional Notes:
- Candidates must possess an Associate Degree or higher, obtain a Military Police Educational Waiver from MCOLES, or be sponsored by their employing law enforcement agency.
