The Associate in Applied Science in Nursing is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions as registered nurses and to provide continued learning and career mobility in nursing for licensed practical nurses. This Associate in Applied Science in Nursing Program is designed for prior-year graduates of Kirtland’s LPN programs. Applicants must possess an LPN license when applying to the program and must have earned a 3.0 or higher G.P.A. in specific  PN courses to be considered for admission into the LPN to ADN program. Following successful completion of the LPN to ADN program, graduates are eligible to take the license exam to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN). Each class of nursing students is considered a cohort (group) and courses/schedules are assigned. Graduates of the LPN to ADN Program are qualified to enter the many BSN completion programs available.

Prerequisites and General Education Requirements: 37-42.5 credits


  • Current LPN License (20-21.5 credits)

Nursing Requirements: 25.5 credits


Each course in the program must be passed with a minimum grade of ”C+”.

Total credits: 62.5-68


Sequence of classes


Successful completion of each course with a “C+” or higher grade is required in order to continue in the Nursing Program.

Notes:


  • Contact hours vary based on the catalog requirements for the LPN certificate over the past 4 catalogs and whether intermediate algebra was waived due to testing.
  • A current PN license is required.
  • All nursing programs are subject to change.  Program requirements apply to students accepted into the nursing program in the 2018-2019 academic year. 
  • BIO-25000 and BIO-25100 are accepted if both were previously taken and a “B” or better grade was earned in each course or other appropriate course substitution at the discretion of the Director of Nursing.
  • RN Pharmacology is required as a prerequisite (NUR-10902 Nursing Pharmacology I and NUR-12900 Nursing Pharmacology II or NUR-21415 Nursing Pharmacology or NUR 21417   Nursing Pharmacology or equivalent coursework based on departmental evaluation and approval).
  • Applications are accepted annually between January 15th and May 15th for fall admission.  Students need to meet with their academic advisor to begin the application process.  An entrance exam with required score of 850 or higher will be necessary to be accepted into the program. Students are ranked for acceptance into the program based on entrance exam.  Entrance exam may be taken three times; if the applicant does not meet the required score on the 3rd attempt, the applicant must wait three years to attempt the exam again and be considered for admission. 
  • Felony convictions and certain misdemeanor convictions will prohibit admission to the nursing program.  For more information, please check with the Health Sciences Office at healthsciences@kirtland.edu.
  • Drug testing and background checks of all students will be required prior to final program acceptance.
  • Immunization records and a recent physical exam are required for final admission.
  • Please note that the Nursing Program is a Full-Time Program that may require attendance in lecture, lab, or simulation Monday through Sunday at any time. Clinical may be assigned during day or evening hours.  This will require the ability to maintain a flexible schedule from any applicant.  Accommodations for work or personal schedules cannot be guaranteed.
