Foundations in Fine Art and Illustration, AAS

Introduction

The mission of the AAS degree with an emphasis in Art and Design is to graduate problem solving, critical thinking innovators and creative communicators skilled in the core principles of visual literacy as well as experience with a variety of media and art forms and the development of a strong portfolio of artwork necessary for today’s artists. Kirtland’s Art Department offers two tracks of emphasis within the AAS for students to build a portfolio concentrating in their area of expertise to use to transfer onto a 4-year program or begin a career in the art world. Students within the various tracks will be able to develop portfolios in one or more of these media markets or Bachelor of Fine Arts programs.

Fine Art and Illustration: Freelance Artist, Photographer, Concept Illustrator, Medical Illustrator, Jewelry Design and Gallery Artist in Drawing, Painting, Photography or Sculpture.

Graphic Design and Digital Media: Graphic Design, Furniture Design, Interior Design, Product Design and Transportation Design

 

General Education Requirements: 13-16 credits


  • 3 cr.
  • or

  • 4 cr.
  • Select Intermediate Algebra (MTH-12000) or Applied Intermediate Algebra (MTH-12002) or higher or any lab science course from AST, BIO, CHE, GEL or PHY: 4-5 cr.
  • Select one social science course from ECO, GEO, POL, PSY or SOC: 3-4 cr.
  • Select any speech course: 3 cr.

Approved Electives: 9-12 credits

Transfer Pathway - Art & Design

If you plan to transfer to an art program at a public 4-year university or college in Michian, this pathway offers recommended courses to prepare you for the journey.  Please work with your advisor to ensure a smothh transition to your chosen public 4-year university or college’s art program.

Humanities

Select two humanities courses from different disciplines. 

Highly recommended humanities electives:

Other humanities options include ENG 21400 or higher, any HIS, SPN 11000MUS 10100 through MUS 12800, or PHL 21000.

Math

Select one math course from the following list:

Science

Select two science courses from different disciplines.  Science choices come from AST, BIO, CHE, GEL and PHY.  At least one class must include a  lab.  

Social Science

Select two social science courses from different disciplines.  Choose from ECO, GEO, POL, PSY, or SOC.
