ADN 3+1 Program with Saginaw Valley State University

|
Students planning to enter the 3 + 1 program with Saginaw Valley State University should first declare the Associate in Science and Arts degree, then work closely with their Kirtland and SVSU advisors to choose appropriate courses for transfer. Once accepted into both programs (Kirtland Community College and Saginaw Valley State University), students will officially declare the 3 + 1 program as their program of study (DDRNS).

Kirtland Prerequisite Requirements: 21-22 credits
ALH 10101, ALH 11101, BIO 23500, and BIO 23600 require a grade of “B-” or higher. All other prerequisite courses require a grade of “C” or higher. Kirtland Program Requirements: 49 credits
Kirtland nursing courses must be completed with a grade of “B-” or higher. Minimum Kirtland Program Requirements: 70-71 credits
Saginaw Valley State University Program Requirements
- NURS-301 Using Evidence for Professional Nursing Practice 3 cr.
- NURS-377 Foundations in Population Health 3 cr.
- NURS-379 Providing Care in Populations 3 cr.
- NURS-401 Nursing Leadership and Ethics 3 cr.
- NURS-479 Nursing and Healthcare System Change (must be licensed) 3 cr.
Saginaw Valley State University General Education Requirements
SVSU’s general education requirements also include Communication Intensive (CI) courses. Kirtland’s CI courses are HIS 20400 and HUM 20500. If the student’s transcript reflects MTA completion, they will meet the majority of the General Education requirements (in this case, CI classes must be completed at SVSU). - Category 1 Literature course 3 cr.

- Category 7 Social Institutions course 3 cr.
- Category 8 International Systems course 3 cr.

Notes:
- All nursing programs are subject to change.
- A minimum of 30 SVSU credits should be earned to meet their residency requirement.
- Kirtland minimum GPA for program entry is 2.4. SVSU minimum GPA for entry is 3.0.
- BIO-25000 (Human Anatomy) and BIO-25100 (Human Physiology) are accepted if previously taken and a “B-” or better was earned in each course.
- Timeframe on science pre-requisite courses (A&P 1 and 2, Med Term) accepted is within five years of application to the program.
- Prerequisite classes may only be repeated once for the required grade within 10 years, failure to be successful after the second attempt will disqualify you from the ranking process (withdrawing and transfer classes do count).
- Entrance TEAS exam with required score of 65% or higher will be necessary to be accepted into the program. Entrance exam may be taken three times; if the applicant does not meet the required score on the 3rd attempt, the applicant must wait three years to attempt the exam again and be considered for admission.
- If student has failed out of another nursing program, they may meet with Director of Nursing for consideration of entrance to our program.
- Applicants must be at least 18 years of age or older by the first day of clinical.
- Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED on file with the Registrar’s Office before applying to the program.
- Felony convictions and certain misdemeanor convictions will prohibit admission to the nursing program. For more information, please check with the Health Sciences Office at NursingHS@kirtland.edu.
- Drug testing and background checks of all students will be required prior to final program acceptance.
- Applications are accepted biannually, January 15 through May 15 for fall admission and January 15 through September 15 for winter admission. Students need to meet with their academic advisor to begin the application process.
- Immunization records and a recent physical exam are required for final admission.
- Nursing programs may have cohort groups in the fall and winter semesters. Please note that the Nursing Program is a full-time program that requires attendance in lecture, lab, or simulation Monday through Sunday at any time. Clinical may be assigned during day or evening hours. This will require the ability to maintain a flexible schedule from any applicant. Accommodations for work or personal schedules cannot be guaranteed.
